Have you ever wanted to start a home based business? Do you know how to develop a passive residual income or start a home business? Why do you want a home based business? These are important questions you must ponder and give some thought to. How do I get started or where do I go to learn about all this stuff? If you are reading this, I hope it’s because you wish to build a peaceful residual income and take control of your life.

From all that I have learned, read and observed over the past 10 years in the network marketing profession, successful people have 3 common traits that they have to build a solid passive residual income.

Those 3 elements are:

(1) A big “Why”
(2) Heart
(3) Being Coachable

Without those 3 elements as a foundation, everything else doesn’t matter in my opinion. You see – those 3 critical traits sets the stage for building a successful home based business and going through the ups and downs of creating a residual income. One must seriously consider their “Why” – because it will require they invest 10-15 hours a week over the next 3 to 5 years minimum if they want a solid home business. If it’s only for the money, they will not last because money at some point in the future will not be the driving force to building a passive residual income. Your why is your core desire about why you want to invest so much time in a home based business and what is it that you truly want out of life. For example, it could be to have your significant other home with the kids on a full time basis. It could be to have a better quality of life for your family, taking an extra vacation, purchasing a new vehicle or all of the above.

In other words, is your “why” big enough to push you through those challenging times when your business is not going so well or its late at night and your tired in need of some sleep. Successful people have a big why and are willing to forgo some sleep, invest some extra time away from the family to get the business going. By the way, to have a successful home based business and develop a residual income, you will sacrifice some time with your family. It’s simply not possible to work full time, develop a home business and devote the same time to your family. I’m not suggesting this will last forever, but your why needs to be important enough that you understand the reason you are doing this home based business. It’s because you want a better quality of life.

The second element is you need to truly care about helping others succeed and having a heart. Help enough people get what they want and you will in time achieve your level of success in a home based business. If you are only in this for yourself, good luck. Over the years I have seen many people fail in our business who didn’t fully understand the truth in that line. They felt they didn’t need the “Personal Growth” material, all they needed were the mechanics, and the Nuts & Bolts, scripts etc and they would just “do it”. With a touch of arrogance perhaps they just felt they knew all about that stuff and were above taking the time to learn how to become more every day.

Leaders are readers and understand that nobody is ever finished that journey. That one major quality of all real leaders is that they constantly are working upon themselves to be better and more each day. Remember, this is a people business and you need to invest time in people and develop a relationship over the long term to create a truly successful home based business and have a solid residual income in network marketing.

The third element and perhaps one of the most important is how coachable are you. Our business is a “People Business”. We are in the business of attracting quality people and helping them enhance their lives by enhancing the lives of others. If you are the type of person that knows it all, good luck again. It doesn’t hurt you to let someone else help you be successful in your home based business. I learned this from a very good friend and my coach – Cameron Howard. We used to butt heads a lot many years ago and still do some days, but I can truly say without hesitation that I have learned so much from him and am very thankful that he invested time with me. A good coach and mentor will be your roadmap, invest time in you and help you become successful to the best of their abilities.

We must be coachable to attract other people that are also coachable. As we grow into a stronger position of leadership, we develop the skills to coach the coaches to coach the coachable. Everybody is always a Leader-In-Training and remains so.

So, are you coachable? Take a moment and look at the results in your life to date and ponder where you may have been more trainable and thus more successful. Perhaps you have read all “those” books and feel you know better. If you attract others just like yourself, and you will – are they going to succeed with their present attitudes and philosophies? Experience has proven to us that only those that are truly coachable grow into positions of leadership. All leaders are fully aware that they must first be followers and remain open minded to learning more always. Does that describe you?

A good coach and mentor, is about being a friend and creating a relationship, realizing it just takes time. Respect is earned. If we do not invest time in people we will not be successful, thus we will not be able to develop a solid residual income or have a successful and long lasting home based business. The secret is to develop the skill to know who best to invest our time with. People are an intangible thing. It takes time to truly get to know another person and even at that we only know most people somewhat. To further complicate matters, there is no way to know beforehand just who is going to be successful. There is no way to truly be sure if a person’s desire to BE Free is so strong that they will go through the obstacles on the path to success. Many people enter our home business with a ton of people handling skills, leadership experience, family needs etc, in short, all that one would think they need to be tremendously successful and they never do a thing. Others, with little experience etc just go out and “do it” because they want it so bad they will pay the price to learn the skills necessary to succeed.

There is no proven way to measure the “Right Stuff” of a person until they are actually in the field doing it. There are “leading indicators” that suggest the potential is there however. These take time to ascertain and become aware of. It can’t be done effectively and consistently in a 5 or 10 minute conversation. It just takes time to get to know people and for them to get to know us. If you want a solid home based business and a solid residual income, realize you need to invest time in people, develop respect for each other and be a friend.

All of the skills needed to build a peaceful residual income are learnable. Every single person reading this document can BE another success story and have a solid home based business. Everybody!

I was thinking the other day about what was the initiator of my Home Business Opportunity. It would be interesting to do a survey of a cross section of the people involved to find out their reason/s for starting. To me it was my perception of freedom from the daily grind of having to go into work and having to give up 40 plus hours a week for a paycheck. There were other factors too but that was the main, I bet you can relate to that. Having a successful home business is about time/freedom with my family. Additional benefits include, being able to cut down on some major expenses like gas for the car, repairs bills, and time to and from work etc. You do not have to pay to rent for an office or building. You save on heat and lights, and there are certainly a number of tax advantages to having a Home Business Opportunity.

When people decide to start a Home Business they must realize that their personal routines as well as family routines will be disrupted. In fact, they most likely will be changed entirely. Managing your business as well as trying to manage or assist in the management of the household can be very time consuming. And an important distinction has to be made. The two duties have to be separated and family members must realize this. They have to appreciate that even though you are at home you are also at work. The number of interruptions has to be limited and all family members must give you the time to work. If you were at an office downtown they wouldn’t be coming in and interrupting you there.

Many companies are now letting some employees to all or some portion of their work at home. This means that maybe a couple of days per week the employee does not have to come into the office. Look for all the information you can about the particular company. Do a Google search on each company.

There are a few things that you want to avoid and a few things that you should be looking for. Choose a company that has products you have an interest in. Don’t get involved in something that you will not enjoy. You might as well keep your day job. There is no sense in starting an online business so you can work from home and hate it. For example, I prefer the health and wellness field only because of the number of baby boomers retiring on a daily basis and continuing for the next 15 plus years. Plus the fact, nutritional products are consumed every month, resulting in people ordering each month. Hence, you have residual income.

Pick companies that have been around for a few years. Somewhere between three and five years is a good indication that the company has been established. Each day there are more and more companies being formed that are looking for those eager to work from home. The only problem with these new companies is that they have not yet been established and the Internet is a very competitive place. With so many choices, why would you chance it on a start up. Ya, I know you heard about the ground floor opportunity. But really, if the business is solid, waiting a couple of years, means it should be better in that time.

Next, you need to look at your business plan. You need to put it on paper and decide how you will develop your Home Business Opportunity. Consider both the short term and long term goals of what you want to accomplish. Typically, most businesses won’t make money in MLM, but the few that do, takes anywhere from 3 to 5 years if you are serious about your home business. If you believe that you can make money out of the starting block, forget it. Look at your business as a long term investment.

What about a budget? Well, how do yo plan to pay for everything? You may have to do some advertising. That will cost money. To help with your business you may decide to purchase any one of the numerous marketing programs that are available on the Internet. That will cost money, usually in the form of a monthly fee. Give serious consideration to these types of programs and be sure you understand what you are buying. Some are just a waste of your money. Try to set up a budget for twelve months. Include all the expenditures that you can think of. I noticed many MLM companies have their own internal marketing programs as additional expenses.

As outlined above, I have discussed a few areas that you need to understand and know what you are getting yourself into for a Home Business opportunity. It will not be easy and you will be working typically for a few years before seeing any significant gains. Sure you might make a few hundred extra dollars a month in the first year, but that’s not really what you want out of it – is it? I am looking for a full time, walkway income from the Job. Have the proper mindset, write up a business plan that you can live with, research the company and then its time to take action. Success comes to those that are willing to work for it.
